Outstanding season
Ruth Rattner - Birmingham
Salomealways a challenging opera to stagewas another winner in this season's series of outstanding opera productions. And Roberto Mauro's article about the origins of the opera in the program was fascinating.
Please, no more like this
Bernadette Gladden - Rochester Hills
After three amazing operas and one amusing one, Salome was a disappointment. The libretto was so repetitive, the music unmemorable. There was no way to identify with the characters, particularly the insane Salome. The gratuitous nude sceneugh! The "Windsor Ballet" is just across the river. Please go back to the high standards to which we've become accustomed.
More of the same, please
Elton Dixon, MD - Chicago
I came in from Chicago for the end-of-the-season performance. I was very pleased and very happy I did come! Ms. Lister was outstanding as Salome. The dance of "Seven Veils" and the pinnacle ending aria with the "head of John the Baptist" was captivating, alluring and credible. Let's not forget the wonderful bass-baritone Mr. Grimsley and again the flawless conducting of Maestro Lano. Please continue with these great productions.
For opera buffs
Jonathan Fuhrman - Northville
Despite the fact that this is a very challenging opera, MOT proved once again that they are able to produce truly world-class performances. While I wouldn't recommend this opera for a first timer, it is a must see for any opera buff! Eilana Lappalainen gave a STELLAR performance as Salome. Her singing and acting were superb. Backed up by the wonderful performance of the orchestra, it made for an evening to remember. And, as always, the opera talk beforehand was not only informative, but hilarious. Congratulations to MOT on another superb season!
Stripped-down scenery
Karlis Ghay - Bloomfield Hills
A terrible looking set. MOT needs to step it up a bit, or did you spend your entire budget on Aida?
Dreadful
Robert M. - Grosse Point
My wife and I went to hear the production of Salome on Saturday night. Save your money! It is dreadful with a capital "D."
Strange but well done
Christine Sist - Howell
This past Saturday evening was our first viewing of Salome, and although the interpretation of the libretto was a bit strange, it was generally well done. The performers were consistently good. However, at times the orchestra was too loud and powered over the performers. Unlike the performance of Werter, when Mr. Bocelli could not project above the orchestra, this seemed to be more of a case of the opposite. If I were to change anything else, it would have been to make the "Dance of the Seven Veils" a bit more lively and seductive, as portrayed in the film Jesus of Nazareth, in lieu of the slight show of nudity.
All in all considering the music and libretto, MOT has done a fine job of Salome.
Finished on a high note
Dick Dionne - Canton
Wow! Salome is the pinnacle achievement in a strong season. Wednesday's performance was the most thrilling I have seen since Otello. Congratulations to all!
Special praise to the orchestra.
