In Roman-occupied Gaul, around 50 B.C., the Druid priestess Norma must call her people to war against Rome. Secretly Norma has born two children by the Roman proconsul Pollionean enemy of her people. Pollione, however, has fallen for the young priestess Adalgisa. The diva is more desperate for love than life and makes the ultimate sacrifice to attain it. This lyric tragedy is widely regarded as one of Bellini’s greatest operatic works.
