Q & A with Sabrina Elayne Carten

American mezzo soprano Sabrina Elayne Carten makes her company debut as Maria in Porgy and Bess. She has sung a variety of roles in this opera but is most admired for her portrayal of Maria. In 2002 Ms. Carten appeared in the Live From Lincoln Center broadcast of Porgy & Bess on PBS.

What do you like most about Porgy & Bess?
The beautiful music! Gershwin's score is amazing. The glorious orchestration is so captivating and soul stirring; every time I hear it it is like the first time.

What's different about this production?
Roman has some wonderful new ideas. His vision has transformed some scenes and made the opera "new" yet it still holds true to the story.

What is most challenging about playing Maria?
Being mean (to Sportin' Life) but loving to the community. Maria is a true tough cookie.

Anything new to watch out for?
You will have to wait until opening night for the answer to that one! Let's just say there might be another "murder!"

How has your visit been so far?
Working here has been a wonderful experience. The cast is great! The chorus has a wonderful sound! The Detroit Opera staff is absolutely incredible. I hope to be here many, many more times!
