The Underground Railroad

Wrap Up

Goal:   Students will know and understand the Underground Railroad movement.

Extension Activities:
1.    Encourage students to identify the states a fugitive slave would cross in order to reach Canada or freedom.
2.    Have students create a timeline of a famous person (i.e. – Harriet Tubman).
3.    Have a student research and make a presentation on an individual involved in the Underground Railroad.
4.    Have students identify various jobs slaves held on a plantation.  Ask them to identify the advantages and disadvantage of their job as a slave or a future freed individual.
5.    Start a literature circle to read the book The Last Safe House: A Story of the Underground Railroad by Barbara Green.
6.    Have students interview a parent about slavery and the Underground Railroad.
