Core Democratic Values and Slavery 

Lesson 5: Core Democratic Values

Goal:   Students will know and understand the Underground Railroad movement.

Benchmarks/Standards:  SOC III /Standard 2 / Benchmarks 2

Objectives: 
•    The students will be able to identify the importance of the Core Democratic Values.
•    The students will be able to apply the Core Democratic Values freedom and liberty to the lives of those involved in the Underground Railroad. (See Core Democratic Values Summary PDF, FYI)

Materials:
•    An overview of the Core Democratic Values
•    Video:  Great Americans for Children:  Harriet Tubman or choice of text.

Procedures:
1.    The class will review the Core Democratic Values by:
•    Identifying each Core Democratic Value
•    Stating the definition of each value
•    Giving a simple example of each value
2.    The teacher will share text or a video about slaves and the Underground Railroad (Example Video:  Great Americans for Children:  Harriet Tubman). 
3.    Following the presentation, the teacher will lead a discussion on slavery and the Underground Railroad.  The discussion should include the dangers and distance slaves traveled to obtain freedom.
4.    The students will write three – four paragraphs focusing on the Core Democratic Values.

Examples:
•     How the Core Democratic Values Freedom and Liberty were or were not a part of a slave’s life.
•     Why a slave would risk everything to achieve freedom.

Assessment:
         The teacher will create a rubric for the desired paragraph.
