Teaching Guide
The Cincinnati Enquirer article only covered the first two days of the Garner Case. An abbreviated set of notes, called The Rest of the Garner Story, can be printed for each student to use in formulating a story about how the case ended. An article that deals with the historical facts in more detail is also available, called The Garner Fugitive Slave Case, although the reading is pretty high level. You may choose to read sections from this document to supplement the student sheet. It is very comprehensive and worth reading.
Activity: Students will write their own newspaper article. They should write a very persuasive article that is intended to convince the reader of a particular point of view regarding the Margaret Garner case. There are many challenging point of views that can be assumed and students who choose a difficult one should be given extra credit.
