After reading or listening to the story “Follow the Drinking Gourd” by Jeanette Winter and engaging in a teacher led discussion of the core democratic examples of life, equality, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, the student will select one of the following writing objectives: You may wish to print this page out for your own use.

Objective (1)
The student will pretend he/she is Peg Leg Joe (a conductor) waiting at the Ohio River to take the enslaved Africans to freedom.  He/she will write several paragraphs telling why the core democratic values of equality, liberty   and pursuit of happiness helped him/her to become a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
