Operetta Workshop

Music and stage director Julie Smith returns to Learning at the Opera House to conduct and direct

Operetta Workshop is a three-week day camp for young people from ages 10 to 18 to learn acting, singing and dancing, as well as healthy voice care. Participants will perform the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta The Mikado on the Detroit Opera House Main Stage. The production will be fully staged and costumed and will welcome an audience of family, friends and the general public.)

No audition required.

Who can participate: No previous experience necessary.
Age: 10 through high school
When: M-F, July 12-30, 10am-4:00pm each day
Performance: July 30 at 6:00pm
Fee: $425
Activities offered: music, singing, acting, theater, dance, performance-related classes

Create & Perform

Wanted! Young people from upper elementary school through high school who love to create stories, compose music and perform. Students will present their creations in a final performance. Family and friends will be delighted with what these youngsters create!

Lens on the City

Hosts: Karen DiChiera, Director of LATOH; Karen Nagher, Director of Preservation Wayne; photography intructor TBA

Lens on the City is a three-day intergenerational learning experience, August 2-4. In partnership with Preservation Wayne, families or groups of adults and children (8 years to 108 years!), will experience exclusive photo tours of interesting historic sites in Detroit and Hamtramck, including the main branch of the Detroit Public Library, and the Detroit Opera House. Participant photos will be displayed in an exhibit at the Detroit Opera House for the final performance and reception of the Opera Camp and Opera Workshop. Budding photographers will also receive instruction on photography basics from a professional photographer. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Students must bring their own cameras..

Who can participate: Anyone with a camera
Age: 8 to adult
