MIAMI CITY BALLET
Under the leadership of founding artistic director, Edward Villella, Miami City Ballet has quickly soared to the ranks of the nation’s great ballet companies. Making its highly-anticipated Detroit Opera House debut, Miami City Ballet will dazzle audiences with an exciting mixed repertory program, featuring works by legendary choreographers George Balanchine and Twyla Tharp.

Agon – George Balanchine
Widely considered to be among Balanchine’s greatest 20th Century dance works, Agon is the choreographer’s most famous and revered abstract ballet. The ballet was developed as a collaborative effort between Balanchine and his friend Igor Stravinsky, who provided the brilliant score.

Raymonda Variations – George Balanchine
Playful, uplifting and breathtaking choreography, Raymonda Variations is a thrill for classical ballet lovers. Set to uplifting music by 19th Century Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, the ballet is a visual delight of pink tutus and spectacular dancing!

In The Upper Room – Twyla Tharp
One of contemporary choreographer Twyla Tharp’s most popular works, In the Upper Room is a one-act ballet filled with power, energy and speed. A kind of ballet and modern dance face-off, the work, set to music by Philip Glass, features some dancers on pointe and others in sneakers. A cast of 13 performers dance through smoke and light, thrilling audiences with what Tharp describes as “fierce, driving and relentless moves that burn the retina.”
